Sonya L. Burnett, 68, a resident of County Route 1 in the town of Scriba, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. She was surrounded by her family.

Sonya was born in Oswego, and was a life resident of the area.

She was a tireless advocate for alternative education opportunities for children, including The Buc alternative school in Oswego.

She loved the outdoors, gardening, the joys of nature, and her three dogs.

Sonya was an active volunteer in many community organizations

She is survived by her husband, Randy Burnett of Scriba; two daughters, Stacia (David) Steinbach of Oswego, and Lisa (William) Krause of Holland Patent; three sons, John Allen (Terrill) Hashagen of St. Augustine, Florida, Rick Allen (Antoinette) Eicholzer of Liverpool, and Derek Burnett of Scriba; a brother, John Allen Eicholzer of Oswego; and six grandchildren, Tyler D., Rachel, Noah, Ava, Tyler, and Morgan.

She was predeceased by her parents, John Allen Eicholzer, and Sylvia (Gannon) Gillen.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 Sunday, at the Old Timers Banquet Center on County Route 1 in the town of Scriba

There will be no calling hours.
