Obituary

Robert Edward "Bob" Harrold, Jr., 86 of Oswego recently passed away at his home at Springside Manor in Minetto, New York. Bob was the son of the late Robert Edward "Eddie" Harrold, Sr. and Rita Grace Harrold (née Bonner).

Bob grew up in the family home on West Seventh Street in Oswego, New York, next to St. Mary's Church, and attended St. Mary's school through the 8th grade. While at St. Mary's School, he was an altar boy, and served at countless weddings, funerals and masses. Bob often said that he relished serving weekday masses, as this excused him from attending classes during that time.

In Bob's early years, his maternal uncle John "Bucky" Bonner, who served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard WWII, fostered in Bob what would become a life-long love of all things nautical. The two spent countless hours at their "boat house" (a small shack) at the Oswego Marina, long before the current docks were installed. Uncle Bucky taught Bob to tie knots, fish, sail, and the proper use and care of Bob's treasured BB gun.

As an adult, Bob took part in numerous sailing expeditions and competitions both nationally and internationally. He also enjoyed leisure sailing in local waters, monitoring local sailing races, and was a proud member of the Oswego Yacht Club.

In the 1970s, Bob became the owner and operator of The Ferris Wheel Tavern on Water Street. From the 1970s to 1980s The Ferris Wheel was  popular for both locals and students of the then State University of New York College at Oswego. Bob claimed there were even occasional Friday classes held in the tavern. Bob employed many innovative and industrious college students as bartenders; many who remained in touch with him over the ensuing years.

Bob and his partner Kim enjoyed many years in their home on the river, where Bob could often be seen with his binoculars watching the passing boats. His years in his home in Minetto inspired him to run for Town Supervisor, a post he was elected to in the 1990s.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his partner of more than 40 years, Kimberly Caulfield Maroney, as well as his siblings, MaryJane (Thomas) Tesoriero, Annlyn (William) Warner, and John Harrold.

He is survived by his children, Susan Harrold and Robert Harrold III of Oswego, along with his siblings Constance (Michael) Ross of Oswego and Christopher (Mary) Harrold of Troy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many Bonner cousins.

At Bob's request there will be no services or calling hours. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the care of the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Human Concerns, Inc. of Oswego 75 East Second Street.
