Miguel Gustavo
"Coty" Oyarzabal
Dec 12, 1932 — Mar 6, 2025
Oswego
Miguel Gustavo "Coty" Oyarzabal passed away peacefully at age 92, on March 6th, 2025.
He was born in Cordoba, Argentina, on December 12, 1932. He served in the Argentine Army to complete his civic duty. As a teenager, he played fútbol professionally for his beloved Talleres Fútbol Club. After his soccer career, he went to work in his uncle's print shop; this would lead to his vocation in printing. He learned all aspects of printing, first in letterpress, then offset printing and eventually web printers. He also learned bindery skills as well as page layout and design.
He met Graciana (Caltabiano) and married her in 1961; a marriage that would last until her death in 2006. On his birthday in1963, he immigrated to the United States. He landed at JFK with very broken English and $200 in his pocket. He quickly found two jobs and made enough money to rent his own apartment. He worked in the kitchen at the Waldorf Astoria, as well as a local print shop. It took him only six months to save enough money to send for his wife and son Daniel who were still in Argentina.
He loved living in the United States. He raised his son in New Jersey, but as Daniel moved around to pursue his career in medicine, Miguel and Graciana would follow him to different cities and states to be close to their grandchildren. Miguel loved to travel and worked hard all year so that his family could see America. Every summer he planned family vacations to various destinations in all areas of the country. He believed that if you worked hard, this country would provide for you. He embodied the American dream.
After the loss of his beloved wife Graciana, he went to work at Mitchell Printing in Oswego as their courier. He loved to walk into the shop and smell the ink and paper. He often said he had ink coursing through his veins. Even after his eyesight began failing him, he would notice errors in printing in magazines, on mailers and pizza boxes. He could identify the colors used in the printing like no on else.
He enjoyed gardening, watching tennis, Formula One racing and American football. He and Graciana even attended some games of their favorite team, the New York Giants. But his loyalty lied with the sport he loved, fútbol. He recalled seeing the greats play. He saw Pelé and Maradona but was never more impressed than when he saw Lionel Messi play for his home country of Argentina. Their 2022 World Cup win meant so much to him.
He was also an avid storyteller. Even at 92, he would share stories about his childhood, all with the typical humor that Cordoba is famous for.
He is survived by his son, Daniel Coty (Erin) and his five beloved grandchildren: Zachary, Jane, Caleb, Donovan and Abigail; as well as nieces and nephews in Argentina and the U.S. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anisetto and Rosario and all nine of his siblings, he was the last Oyarzabal of his generation.
He will be buried alongside his wife at St. Peter's Cemetery in Oswego, New York in a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to UNICEF.
