Lucile
Wheeler
Mar 1, 1920 — Mar 4, 2018
Lucile Wheeler, 98, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at St. Luke Health Services.
Mrs. Wheeler was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and grew up in New Haven, Connecticut. She had lived in the Oswego-Mexico area for more than 50 years.
She learned to cook at the age of 12, and had worked in many area places through the years, including Green's Department Store, and The Bradford Room at WT Grant. She had also been a housekeeper and nanny for the Puzauskas and Nesbitt families in Oswego.
Mrs. Wheeler was an active member of the Oswego Salvation Army church in Oswego. She served as a cook and was known for making the best roast beef in New York State.
Prior to residing at St Luke, Lucy spent a great deal of time volunteering there. She enjoyed working in the Gift Shop and engaging residents, staff, and families with her cheerful "Hi Doll" as she went room to room doing the weekly Bird Visits.
Through the years, Lucy's hobbies included doll collecting, cross stitch, travel, and all kinds of arts and crafts. In February of this year, a selection of Lucy's artwork entitled "Madeline at the Oswego Lighthouse" was submitted to LeadingAge in Albany, NY to hopefully be chosen as a piece that will be on display in a traveling art exhibit throughout NYS.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Montgomery, who died in 1972; and her second husband, Frank Wheeler, Jr., who died in 2011.
She is survived by her dear friend, Donna Rose of Scriba; and many of her friends and colleagues from the Oswego Salvation Army.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00pm, Wednesday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
Spring burial will be in Mexico Village Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 Wednesday, prior to the service, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
