John W.
Morley
Dec 22, 1943 — Jun 1, 2018
John W. Morley, 74, passed away on Friday June 1, at his home.
He was born in Oswego and was the son of the late John and Martha (Callaghan) Morley. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharon (Neuman) Morley; his daughter, Megan (David) Thomas of Williston, Vermont and his son, Andrew (Heather) Morley of Jericho, Vermont. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Ken) McGonagill, of Cumming, Georgia, a sister–in-law, Nora Neuman of Logan, Ohio and was predeceased by his brother, Donald (Mary) Morley of Oswego. He had five grandchildren; Samuel, Margaret and Maebel Morley and Cordella and Adelaide Thomas.
John was a graduate of Oswego High School and often recalled a love of life on the road with his parents during the years in which they ran a carnival. John and his wife met in the old Woolsey's Chart Room; Sharon was a student at SUNY Oswego and John a lineman for Niagara Mohawk. Although the majority of his career years were spent as a machinist and mechanic for the power company, he later specialized in troubleshooting outages across the North Country and eventually dabbled in real estate.
John had a style of showing, not telling (well, maybe a little telling) and was committed to providing for his family with a strong sense of steadiness and security. John and Sharon built their own home, but that was just the beginning of many projects for him. He restored antique cars, built guitars, built his grandkids a sleeping porch at their camp on the St. Lawrence, and eventually enjoyed helping his kids take on their own house projects. As a past time in recent years, John seemed to delight in planning intricate heating and water systems that even the most skilled mechanics making house calls struggled to troubleshoot. John and Sharon loved their travels together. They saw the country, explored the St. Lawrence River, took regular trips to Vermont to see the grandkids, and meandered every back road of the North Country where John defied the laws of nature by never getting lost, and always finding a diner.
John loved family togetherness, a fantastic yarn, and a hearty laugh. As a regular answer to their questions about how the world worked, John's grandchildren often heard "I don't know, call Pop!" He will continue to be loved, and very much missed.
Calling hours will be 12 Noon-2 PM Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Funeral and committal services will follow at 3 PM at the Page Memorial Chapel in Riverside Cemetery.
Donations in John's name can be made to the Chippewa Bay Community Club, PO Box 116 Chippewa Bay, NY 13623
