James E.
Syrell
May 4, 1945 — Mar 27, 2025
Oswego
James Edward "Jim" Syrell, 79, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, in Syracuse, New York.
Born on May 4, 1945, in Oswego, New York, Jim was the son of Harry and Gladys (Laird) Syrell. He grew up in Oswego alongside his brothers Robert, William, Gerald, and Richard. His father owned Harry's Bait and Tackle, a local fixture that helped spark Jim's lifelong love for fishing and the outdoors.
Throughout his life, Jim embraced the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who appreciated the quiet beauty of the woods and waters around him. In more recent years, he developed a fondness for video games—a pastime he enjoyed sharing with younger generations—and he delighted in capturing moments behind the camera, especially when photographing his grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife MaryAnn (Malambri) Syrell; his parents Harry and Gladys; and his brothers Robert, William, and Gerald. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Tammy Syrell; Cindy (Mitch) Treen; and Jamie (Neil) Burris. Jim also leaves behind his brother Richard (Mary) Syrell. His legacy continues through numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry forward the warmth of his presence and the stories he shared.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dain Cullinan Funeral Home, located at 112 East 2nd Street in Oswego, New York. A funeral service will take place Thursday, April 3rd at the same location starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery and Mausoleum at 379 East River Road in Oswego.
Jim's memory lives on in those who knew him—in every cast line on a quiet lake, every photograph capturing a grandchild's smile, and every story told around a family table. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
