Obituary

Almore J. Miller, Jr, 91, a resident of Fulton, passed away September 16, 2018, at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego.
Mr. Miller was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He was the son of the late Almore Miller, Sr. and Emma (Moore) Miller. His family moved to Fulton when he was 8 years old.
Mr. Miller was a veteran of the United States Navy. He enlisted in the US Navy when he was 17 years old and served his country for 22 years. He retired in 1965 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
In 1950, he married his wife, Betty (Nearbin) Miller. They were married for 67 years until her death in April of this year.
His family moved to Pennsylvania in 1970, and he and his wife returned to Oswego County in 2010.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he was employed for 20 plus years as a computer programmer within NY and PA facilities. He also worked, for 20 years, as an executive limousine driver with the A1 Limousine Co. from Philadelphia, PA.
His final retirement from working outside the home wasn't until he was 81 years old.
He also enjoyed many of life's adventures after his military retirement.
As an avid outdoor sportsman, he loved to hunt and fish as well as being a gun club member. Almore obtained an expert marksmanship level with his firearms. His son Al III was beside him during many of these outdoor activities.
Almore and Betty, with family members, were avid bowlers. He received many awards for this sport as well.
During a truly a remarkable time of 20 plus years, Almore and Betty enjoyed a past-time of becoming licensed users of ham operator radios from their PA home.
He was able to connect with fellow ham operators from all over the world.
There are also fond memories, over many years when the family got together for celebrations and trips.
When the children were very small, he and Betty with the family would travel to the NJ shores and go crabbing with other family relatives. This started many years of birthday celebrations for him and Betty with enjoying a meal of crabs and corn on the cob.
Almore's and Betty's many memories of living in Hawaii during his early years in the Navy included the birth of their daughter, Alene, joining their first-born daughter, Gladys Ann.
Once back in the States, while stationed in Bethesda, Maryland, Almore, Betty and the girls welcomed their third child, a son, Almore J Miller III.
After retiring from the Navy, Almore, Betty, Alene and Almore III, settled in PA. This was only a short distance from Atlantic City, and they spent many memorable trips to the Atlantic City boardwalk. Over the years, Almore and Betty enjoyed the celebrity shows, casinos, and taking advantage of the never-ending food buffets.
Alene and her family, along with the grandchildren, were always on hand to help out whenever they were needed at Almore and Betty's PA home.
The Miller and Nearbin families and their many friends were able to send Almore and Betty to Hawaii in 2000 for a visit in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Almore and Betty again traveled to Hawaii in 2002 along with their daughter Alene and her husband Lou. They celebrated Lou and Alene's 25th wedding anniversary while there.
