Oswego – John Joseph “Shuffle” Whelley, a resident of 76 Ellen St. in Oswego, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday April 19, 2009.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Daly) Whelley.
He served in the US Navy during WWII.
He was employed at the Marathon Corp; and then in Maintenance at Alcan Aluminum from 1961 until his retirement in 1989.
Shuff especially enjoyed his daughter, his grandchildren, and watching the neighborhood children grow. He also enjoyed puttering in his garden, and growing green grass.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy (Veen) Whelley; his daughter and son-in-law Christine and Benjamin Metcalf of Rochester; 2 grandchildren, Marna Lee Metcalf and John Patrick Metcalf; his sister-in-law Catherine Foederer; a special cousin, Helen Murphy; and several loving nieces and nephews.
In his hour of need, he was taken care of by his niece, Connie Flynn.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and James Whelley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday, in St. Mary’s Church.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund; or to the Lakeside Heart Center.
